Shock as Smith quits Kent

SMITH: says diminished trust in the leadership at St Lawrence has been a big factor in his decision to move on
SMITH: says diminished trust in the leadership at St Lawrence has been a big factor in his decision to move on

KENT'S former England batsman Ed Smith has left the county to join Middlesex - and taken a swipe at the leadership at St Lawrence.

Smith's future at Canterbury has been the subject of speculation since a mid-season altercation between him and Kent's Aussie all-rounder Andrew Symonds.

It is believed to be the club's reaction and handling of that affair, rather than any personal differences, that has precipitated his decision to move on.

Smith told The Times: "The idea that I would leave Kent - the team I've always supported and the place I was born - because of an argument with an overseas pro is not credible.

"Much more of a factor is a series of decisions by Kent which sadly left me with diminished trust in the leadership of the club."

Although there had been much speculation about his departure, it will still shock and disappoint many Kent supporters. Middlesex were favourites to sign Smith but neighbours and keen rivals Surrey had also been linked with him.

Meanwhile, it's been announced that the only player not being retained by Kent is fast bowler Ben Trott. The 29-year-old joined the county from Somerset in 2000.

Talks are continuing with batsman Michael Carberry about a new contract while Niall O'Brien, Min Patel and Simon Cusden have been offered extensions. Youngsters Joe Denly and Richard Piesly have been awarded development contracts.
