Jen Wilson says Canterbury’s memorable win over Reading will have been for nothing if they don’t follow it up with a victory at struggling University of Birmingham this weekend in their final game before the mid-season break.

Mel Clewlow struck the only goal as Canterbury returned to the top of the Investec National Premier Division with a win over the Berkshire side on Sunday afternoon.

Player-coach Wilson said: “It was a tough battle and not the prettiest but that was always likely with so much at stake. The important thing was the three points.”

“We don’t want to undo the hard work when we play against Birmingham. It will be a tough game but we will give it our full attention. A three-point lead at the top is not very much, so we need to keep going.”

While attempting to make it 2-0, Nikki Kidd hit a shot which struck Wilson on the head, leading to lengthy treatment and a trip to hospital for the South African.

Wilson said: “I wasn’t knocked out so I was able to continue after some treatment and I have to thank the Reading physio who helped steri-strip it at half-time.

“Thankfully my ear cushioned the blow a little.”

The city club trailed their Berkshire visitors by goal difference alone going into the game but are now three points clear.

They also have a nine-point lead over fifth-placed Bowdon Hightown in the race for the play-offs but Wilson said: “We are not even thinking about that yet, there is a long way to go.”
