Dartford's tolls are to be scrapped from next October... but you'll still have to pay!

The move to replace the toll booths at Dartford with so-called free-flow charging system has been announced following two consultations and changes to the law.

Drivers will, from October 2014, have to pay through a range of methods - including phone, text, online and at shops.

But if they fail to do so fines will be brought in - increasing to £105 if not paid within 28 days.

It's hoped that the new system, which in theory means no more queues and barriers, will improve traffic flow at the river crossing for the 140,000 to 150,000 vehicles which use it each day.

Roads Minister Stephen Hammond said: “The Dartford Crossing is vital to the local and national economy and introducing free-flow technology will cut congestion and improve journeys for the thousands of motorists and businesses who use the Crossing every day.

"We are now able to take forward the legislation to make sure charges will be able to be effectively enforced once free-flow charging at the Crossing is introduced next year."

Drivers will be encouraged to pay the charge before they use the Crossing.

But changes made as a result of the consultations mean motorists will have longer – up to midnight on the following day - to pay the standard charge.

The penalty for non-payment will be £70, with a reduced rate of £35 if paid within 14 days. If the penalty is not paid within 28 days it would increase to £105.

The announcement came the day after a meeting to outline the options for a third Thames crossing in Dartford.
