Computer whizz kid Ryan Zhang wants a career in web design after getting his first site online

If Kent Online needs a fresh new look in a few years’ time, we know who to call.

Ryan Zhang may not yet have left primary school, but the 10-year-old has already taken his first steps into web design by getting his very own site online.

The Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School pupil designed Propel Web Development from scratch after impressing his IT teachers and already has aspirations to turn his talents into a career.

Ryan Zhang, 10, has designed his own website from scratch and is hoping to use it to showcase his code-writing skills.

“I have been coding for about a year now, starting off with small programs, and one of my teachers told me about this thing called Scratch,” explained Ryan.

“I watched some videos on YouTube and saw these young children make these amazing things with it and it made me think if they can do it then I can too.

“Eventually I got quite good at it and then moved into real coding, scripting and writing my own games.

“I have really found out my love for this and it is going to be my dream job for the future.” Ryan Zhang.

“It really fascinated me how you could make these amazing things out of these lines of code.”

Scratch is a simple but powerful programming tool allowing users to create stories, games and animations, but Ryan soon grew out of it and moved onto to more complex coding techniques.

He started experimenting with HTML, which he says ‘blew my mind’, and from there was able to make his own web pages. Soon after, Propel Web Development was born.

“I made a few smaller ones to get used to it and then I made the website myself,” Ryan continued.

“It took me about six weeks to do and I even came up with the terms and conditions. It turned out to actually be a really low budget business.

“The only thing I needed to spend money on was the hosting. I am really happy with how I did not have to spend much money.”

It may not have cost much to make, but Ryan still reckons there is real money-making potential for his website.

Not only does he hope to use it as a way of teaching others how to make their own websites, he also wants it to attract some big businesses.

“A dream project of mine is to make a website for a big business like a good really good shopping site or something like that,” he said.

“I have really found out my love for this and it is going to be my dream job for the future.”

Although he does admit that there is the small matter of a busy final school term to concentrate on first.

Once that is out of the way, he hopes the summer break will give him plenty of time to further hone his skills.
