Explosion heard across Dartford and north Kent traced to incident in West Thurrock

An explosion which could be heard across north Kent was caused by an incident at a chlorine scrubbing plant in Essex.

People living near the scene in West Thurrock were urged to stay indoors and keep their doors and windows closed after a strong smell of chlorine was reported.

However, at 10.30pm it was declared that there was no danger to the public.

One man suffered minor injuries to his shin and was treated at the scene by firefighters.
