Our recycled carnival

It may have been a blaze of colour but the message was very green.

Pupils promoted recycling and sustainability when Temple Hill Community Primary School, Dartford, hosted a carnival with their sister school Oakfield Community Primary school.

The environmentally-friendly theme meant all the costumes and artwork were made from recycled materials.

The 550 pupils who took part put in a lot of work beforehand.

Assistant head teacher Leon Dawson said: “In the two weeks before the carnival the children had put lots of effort into learning about other carnivals.

“Each class made a head-dress and a musical instrument, and everything was made from recyclable products.”

Around 800 parents, carers, relatives and guests were entertained not only by the children but a range of different artists including Bloco Fogo Samba, the Junk Orchestra and Steel Ambition. There were also a number of workshops and a picnic.

Dartford Mayor Cllr Patsy Thurlow attended along with council leader, Cllr Jeremy Kite.

Organiser Gurvinder Sandher, head of the Kent Equality Cohesion Council, said: “This was a very ambitious project and I am so pleased that with the leadership of the two schools and the hard work of the children and parents that both carnivals proved to be a great success and showcased some of the wonderful talent that exists in both Oakfield and Temple Hill.”
