All the latest from Crayford Greyhound Track

To become a stud dog you have to be top class, which usually means a winner of the biggest races such as the Greyhound Derby.

While most greyhounds are therefore sired by a well-known dog, it follows that not all of their offspring are as good as their father.

However, they do produce future champions on occasion, albeit the fact remains the vast majority are run-of-the-mill level.

Having said that, it is always worth taking note of bloodlines when looking for potential winners and one of my favourite stud dogs is College Causeway, who won the Irish Derby.

He has sired almost 1,600 pups since taking up his stud duties. But at Crayford from memory, I have only seen around half a dozen dogs by him.

So I am keeping an eye on Severn Ace trained by Barry O’Sullivan, who is by College Causeway, who had his debut race here at the weekend when finishing fifth in bottom grade A8 over 380m.

While this was not an eye-catching performance, it was the dog’s first career race and the only way now for the June 2013 pup is up.

Once he gets the hang of things, who knows how high he may climb up the ladder?

Saturday evening’s card will feature the annual running of the eagerly-awaited Afghan race over 380m which features as a highlight in the Friends of Crayford Retired

Greyhound’s annual all-sponsored charity meeting.

This race has become a firm favourite with racegoers at Crayford and we get emails and calls during the year enquiring when it takes place.

The race will be run between greyhound races seven and eight on the race card, so if you want to witness a special one-off event, this is your chance.

All 12 greyhound races have been sponsored and will be trophy races, so why not come down and join in the fun?

Performance of the week came from Snowdon Doll, who romped home in a top grade A1 race in a fast time of 23.26sec.

Equally impressive was the dog’s sectional time, trap-to-line first time, of 3.52 on her way to a five-and-a-half length winning margin.

True, the track was running fast on the day but the clock does not lie so in this vein of form, she is going to beat hard to beat.
