Four people are believed to have had a lucky escape when a car overturned in Dover town centre.

Fire crews, paramedics and police were called to the scene outside the Charlton Shopping Centre in High Street yesterday evening.

When firefighters arrived the four people were out of the vehicle. There was an oil leak and a damaged lamp post had to be made safe.

It is not known if anyone was injured, but there are reports one person was detained by police for questioning.

The car, believed to be a Renault Clio, ended up on the pavement on the other side of other parked cars.

The area was cordoned off for several hours.
