Cash promised for big summer concert on bandstand

Deal's biggest supermarket has donated £5,000 towards two large video screens for the annual summer visit to Walmer by the Band of the Royal Marines, Portsmouth.

The money from Sainsbury’s Community Fund was presented at the West Street store to John Perkins, chairman of the Deal Memorial Bandstand Trust.

He said: “The cheque is a huge help towards providing video screens either side of the bandstand for the Royal Marines concert on July 12.

“They are required to allow the large numbers of people on The Strand to follow the progress of the marching band from South Barracks without moving from their seats.

“The screens will also be used to pass information and give the audience who are some distance from the bandstand a better view of the performers.

“We are immensely grateful to Sainsbury’s for sponsoring this aspect of the day.”

Mr Perkins was a director of music at the School of Music in Walmer when the IRA bomb exploded at the barracks in 1989, killing 11 musicians.

The Royal Marines left Deal in 1996 and pledged to return to the town annually to play on the bandstand, which was built as a memorial to those who died.

In October Sainsbury’s decided to support the trust by raising cash for the charity, placing collection buckets in the store.
