Raise cash for Martha Trust and have laugh of a lifetime on Rome or Bust car challenge

Three strangers who became good pals after taking part in Martha Trust’s annual car challenge are now encouraging others to put their names forward for it.

Ruth Clist, 48, Michael Bunn, 57, and Luke Rouse, 38, became friends after taking part in the charity venture that sees teams travel from Dover to a chosen city in cars worth no more than £200.

They first participated in separate cars in 2014’s Monte Carlo Madness before signing up again in 2015 for Bonkers in Barcelona when Mrs Clist and Mr Rouse travelled in one car.

The trio are now joining forces for Rome or Bust 2016 and entering as one team.

They have already bought their transport – an eight-seater Toyota – and have chosen a Scooby Doo theme.

Mrs Clist, of Dover Road, Deal, said: “It’s absolutely hilarious. People just have to do it.

“I think it’s not just about raising money for charity, even thought that’s great. It’s about stepping back into your youth, where you can be carefree for three days and just have fun."

Each team is asked to raise £1,500 in sponsorship to help support young people and adults with profound disabilities at Martha Trust’s homes in Deal and Hastings.

In the past eight years the car challenges have raised a staggering £153,800.

Mr Bunn of Mill Road, Deal, said: “If you really want to help a charity and have lots of fun, this is the challenge for you.

“I love driving, travelling and adventure. There’s an element of fear because you don’t know if you’re going to make it, plus you’re with like-minded people.

“It’s not a race. We’re all in old bangers, so we try and travel along together. You gel very quickly as a group.”

The trip organisers take care of the ferry crossing, accommodation and a flight home. Drivers just need to pay for their own petrol and any toll fees.

The teams meet up every evening for food and drinks. Mr Bunn said there were plenty of practical jokes, too.

Mr Rouse, a finance director from Ashford, said: “I’m looking forward to it.

“It will be a different dynamic, the three of us rather than two.

“We can use our experience.”

Those taking part will depart from Dover on Saturday, September 3, returning on Tuesday, September 6.
