Disabled loo agreed for Paddling Pool in Walmer

Work to construct a disabled toilet by Walmer Green could start as soon as Easter, to the delight of Deal Speaking Up group.

Chairwoman Chrissie Dubber has been rallying support for more accessible toilets by Walmer Green for some time.

Pauline Hamilton of the group asked councillors at Dover District Council’s full meeting on Wednesday what progress was being made and expressed her interest to work with the council on it.

She said: “The need for an accessible toilet and changing room facility in the Walmer Green and paddling pool area has long been accepted.

“The current arrangements prevent disabled people from taking a full and active part in events taking place on Walmer Green and families with a disabled member enjoying the paddling pool.

“We know that this area is popular with people from across the district as well as visitors to the area.”

In response, portfolio holder for property management and public protection Cllr Trevor Bartlett said: “It is a well used and a lovely area but it is lacking a very much needed facility there.

“I have been working with the group and I am very pleased to tell you that subject to the cabinet approval in December, we will be funding it in the budget between 2016-17.

“I have asked for a time-scale and it should be Easter time that work will start.”

Ben Bano who last week called for more provision for disabled people in Deal said: “I welcome the news that the new facilities will be built.

“They will make a great difference particularly for children who want to use the paddling pool.

“I hope this is the start of a more comprehensive review of facilities for people with disabilities in our town.”
