Deal firefighters rescue terrier from shaft in Thanet

A technical rope rescue team helped firefighters to rescue a dog that had fallen into a shaft.

The team, based in Deal, was called to a track off Bromstone Road in Broadstairs at around 7pm yesterday.

A Lakeland terrier named Emerson had been out walking with its owner when it fell into a disused open air concrete shaft, measuring approximately 30m in diameter and 20m deep.

A Deal crew member abseiled into the shaft and created a makeshift harness for the animal. Together they were pulled out.

A spokesman said: “The dog was put into a special harness and reunited with its owner. Apart from a cut paw, he was fine.”
