Guitar hero dies

A top musician, who had a home in Sandwich and performed in Deal, has died aged 68.

Davey Graham has been described in a series of obituary reports as one of Britain’s best folk-blues guitarists.

He started to play as a teenager and at 19 wrote Angi, an instrumental that was later covered by Simon and Garfunkel and Bert Jansch.

Paul Simon went onto describe Mr Graham as “probably England’s greatest guitarist.”

Guy Foster, from Chislet, said: “Davey had significant connections with east Kent and I was lucky enough to rub shoulders with him as a result.

“It must have been about 1973 when he and his wife took up residence in Sandwich and started a folk club around the corner from his house at St Mary’s Church.

“At that time I was in a Dover group called Faith Folk and we played at the Sandwich club once, affording me a glimpse of the great man.

“Davey also played at the folk club in Deal, which is think was based at the Yew Tree in Mill Hill, and I shall never forget seeing him.”

Mr Graham suffered from lung cancer and died in London on December 15. A memorial service is being planned.
