More than 1,000 people have signed a petition objecting to the increase in parking charges across the district.

Members of the council’s scrutiny committee will meet to discuss it on May 22.

The petition is against what is described as a 10 per cent increase in charges in car parks and on the streets which came into effect last month.

The signatories say the charges are damaging to residents, visitors and businesses “in difficult financial times”.

In March, the scrutiny committee received another petition, signed by 141 people, calling for pay parking on the streets of Sandwich to be scrapped and replaced with a one-hour limit.
