Pupils from Sandwich Junior School, St Bart's Road, have been grilling MP for South Thanet Laura Sandys

Bright pupils at Sandwich Junior School have been grilling MP Laura Sandys on local issues that are important to them.

Among the questions asked were whether Ms Sandys paid expenses and if the Conservative party is popular.

The Conservative MP for Sandwich was invited to the school on Friday, March 7, for a Question Time held by the year six pupils.

Ms Sandys said: “The year six students had some fantastic questions about the curriculum and were keen to know all about what happens behind the scenes in parliament.

“The pupils also asked me about the Prime Minister, the Queen, and even boy bands.

“After the Q&A I sat down with the hardworking Sandwich Junior School Council to discuss their work and I have promised to be in contact with Kent County Council about the points raised. It is great to see such an active school council who clearly work very closely with their head teacher, Mrs Shelaigh Roberts.”

The children asked the MP what she thought of changes to the history curriculum which would see them only learning subjects pre-1066.

Head teacher, Mrs Roberts explained: “The children are very unhappy with the changes and that they won’t be able to learn about the Tudors and World War Two.

“She tried to tell them about all the other things they could be learning, like the Bronze Age and Anglo-Saxons but they weren’t having any of it.”

The children also showed Ms Sandys areas of the school that currently needs construction and pointed out problems with parents parking outside the school.

Mrs Roberts explained that the pupils were very happy with the interview and felt like they now understood the role of an MP.
