A Dover-born soloist will be among those taking part in Dover Choral Society’s performance of Elijah this weekend.

Former bank manager Philip Spendley will be taking the lead role as the Old Testament prophet for this performance of Mendelssohn’s work at Dover Town Hall on Saturday at 7.30pm.

It is not the first time that Mr Spendley, who is a former Dover Grammar School student, has been a soloist with the society.

On this occasion, he will be supported by English soprano Claire Surman, Australian tenor Stuart Haycock, and French mezzo-soprano Chloe de Backer.
Elijah was written for the Birmingham Festival and had its premiere in Birmingham Town Hall in August 1846, conducted by the composer himself.

It was very well received, to the point of hysteria, by the audience of 2000.

Tickets are available from Dover Tourist Information Centre, next to the Town Hall, priced at £12 (£6 for students), or from members of the society. Some tickets will be available on the door.

Tickets can be pre-booked by calling 01304 820149 or 01304 822042.

The society has a website at www.doverchoralsociety.org.uk
