Turner Contemporary in Margate gallery to show work of Linus Nye, winner of art competition in Worth

A painting by a six-year-old from Worth will be displayed at Margate’s Turner Contemporary after it was chosen from more than a thousand entries in an art competition.

Linus Nye, of The Street, Worth, entered the Turner Portfolio, which is the gallery’s annual art competition for pupils, students, teachers and art education professionals.

The Year 2 pupil at Worth Primary School, who loves to paint and draw, attends the Forge Cottage Art Club in Elmstone, near Wingham, run by artist Mark Mason, on Saturday afternoons.

He spent many hours working on his painting, which he named Flying Eggs, making it into the 100 who were shortlisted.

Linus and his family were invited to Canterbury Christ Church University for an awards ceremony, where all the shortlisted artwork was on display.

His mother, Shelley Nye, said: “We sat in the front row and I was nervous but Linus was very confident he had won. I was reassuring him that it didn’t matter if he hadn’t, that just to be here was an achievement.

“We looked up at the stage and Linus’s painting was on the screen and the judges were saying they admired his creativity, imagination, technique and humour shown in the painting.

“He was highly commended in the Key Stage 2 category for seven to 11-year-olds.

“Linus is only in Key Stage 1 but we didn’t want to make a fuss!

“After a brave walk to the stage on his own, he returned with a £20 art supplies voucher and a very, very proud and happy smile.”

Interviews with Turner staff about why he loved art and some photos rounded off an exciting night.

Linus’ work will be displayed at the Turner Contemporary from Friday, May 27, to Sunday, July 24.

His work will hang with that of other winners. It will be seen by an estimated 300,000 people.
