Primary school entry mix-up relief for River family

A family in River are celebrating after an “administration error” was corrected and their daughter will now be going to the primary school of their choice.

Clair Waller, 32, of Luckhurst Road, was initially told that her daughter Imogen, 3, had been given a place at Priory Fields Primary not River Primary – despite the family living 100 metres from the latter school.

Mrs Waller was diagnosed with a spine tumour in 2009, which limits her mobility and she is now registered disabled.

This would have made it very difficult for her to make the two-mile journey to Priory Fields Primary by foot, meaning she would have had to make two bus rides each day.

Speaking at the time of the original decision, her husband, John Waller, 37, said: “It’s made me quite angry.

"I’ve never heard of someone not getting any of their three choices. My wife has been in floods of tears.

“We don’t know anyone that lives in River that didn’t get in to River Primary.”

Their second and third choices had been Temple Ewell and Whitfield Primary.

On Tuesday, the family were informed that there had been an administration error, and Imogen had been offered a place at River.

Mr Waller told the Mercury: “We thought it had been a mistake all along but when we phoned they said we would have to appeal.

“They just think they would never make a mistake.”
