Hygiene inspection to take place to pin-point areas of improvement for Dover Leisure Centre

An inspection into the hygiene standards of Dover Leisure Centre is set to take place today (Monday).

Members from the council with two residents, Peter Ward and Charmaine Simmons, will tour the Townwall Street building to see what can be done to improve it for membership holders.

Mr Ward, of Balfour Road, raised the issue in a petition which was signed by hundreds of people earlier this year.

The father-of-one said: “I am sure we are going to find a few nasty things.

“I have noticed they have started improving the cleaning and they have advertised for a cleaner, but they are going to have their work cut out.”

It will start at 5pm and is the result of a scrutiny meeting where Mr Ward expressed concern about the leisure centre’s future.

A review into whether it will be relocated is said to have been concluded and the results will be presented to the cabinet committee at Dover District Council.

Steve Davis, the managing director of Your Leisure previously told the Mercury that the centre was old and not dirty.

He said he welcomed the results of the review and felt that comments pointing towards the lack of hygiene in the centre were “demoralising” for the workers.

Mr Ward said: “I am looking forward to asking some questions afterwards as I assume we are meeting with the council afterwards with the feedback of what we had found.”

He said that a Facebook forum which has been used as a platform to encourage signatures has shown more pictures of hanging wires and a leaking roof.

“The workers have been trying because they know we are coming for the inspection,” he said.
