Full-time carer complains about length of time a new specialist chair will take to be made and delivered

A full-time carer fears her husband’s mobility will be affected by the length of time a specialist chair will take to be delivered.

Philip Freer, 44, of Adelaide Road in Eythorne, has multiple sclerosis (MS), which significantly restricts his mobility.

He is wheelchair-bound and lives in a house that has been adapted to his needs.

The father-of-one spends much of his day in a rise-and-reclining chair supplied by Kent County Council’s social services department.

But according to his wife Paula, it was condemned by occupational therapists in July and she is questioning why he is still without a replacement.

She has been informed that it could be early December before it arrives.

A spokesman for KCC confirmed the chair was inspected on Thursday, September 10, as part of an annual routine check.

Mrs Freer, also 44, said: “When he is at home he is in it all the time, it is the bulk of his life and they know that.

“He is in it a good 90% of his life, from the moment he gets up to when he goes to bed. I just think it is dangerous him being in it.”

A press spokesman for KCC said: "We sympathise with the situation Mr and Mrs Freer find themselves in.

"Although the chair is old and needs replacing we do not believe it to be dangerous.

“It was recommended the chair be replaced, so the next day an occupational therapist visited and began the process to order a new chair for Mr Freer.

“The family were offered an alternative chair to use until the new one arrived, however this was declined.”

Mrs Freer said she refused the temporary self-functioning chair, because she would need to use a hoist to lower her husband into the chair and do the same to get him out of it.

She said: “If he started using hoists every day then his legs would completely lock up.”

The spokesman said: “We have ordered a unique chair made specifically for Mr Freer’s needs.

“This has to be built from scratch, therefore it may take up to eight weeks to be delivered.

“We are doing all we can to speed this process up, however this is the standard time it takes to make a specialist item like this.

“We are aware that Mr Freer’s condition has deteriorated and we are providing extra support to the family.”
