M20: Drivers urged to avoid motorway as lorries queue back from Port of Dover until Roundhill Tunnel

Drivers are told to expect huge delays on the M20 as tailbacks build up back from the Port of Dover to the Roundhill Tunnel.

Police are warning of tailbacks along the coast-bound carriageway of the M20, with drivers told to avoid the motorway if at all possible.

The traffic congestion has been caused by delayed sailings due to bad weather.

DFDS Seaways is reporting waits of up to two hours and 40 minutes, and P&O has also warned of possible delays.

Eurotunnel at Folkestone is also affected, with passengers facing waits of up to one and a half hours.

It comes just days after Operation Stack was brought in for four days on the M20 after a Eurotunnel lorry fire.

Police are working with the Highways Agency and others, including the Port of Dover, to manage traffic.

A spokesman said: "Drivers who are planning journeys towards the coast are urged to consider alternative routes and plan for as much time as possible.

"Police are warning motorists of extreme delays, via motorway signage, as far north as the M1, M11, M40 and west along the M4 and M3."
