George Hirjanu jailed for Christmas Day rape after being tracked to Romania

The second of two sex fiends who stalked and brutally raped a woman in Dover on Christmas Day 2014 has finally been jailed.

George Hirjanu fled to his native Romania after reading on Kent On Line that police were hunting him and his pal Tudor Tofoi.

Tofoi, 25, of High Street, Dover also went abroad but returned after his mother persuaded him to face trial at Canterbury Crown Court.

He was found guilty and given an 18-year extended jail sentence – but police had to go to Romania to find Hirjanu and carry out DNA tests.

Hirjanu was brought back to Kent on an international arrest warrant – and after pleading guilty to rape was given a 16 year-three month extended sentence.

Judge Adele Williams told the weeping rapist he had shown no remorse and had made derogatory remarks about his vulnerable victim.

The 25 year old had also tried to blame Tofoi for instigating the brutal assault – but the judge rejected his claim.

She told him the two of them had picked on the young woman after she had left a pub in Dover and then stalked her – trying to engage her in conversation.

During a 20 minute conversation with a friend, she was heard telling the two to go away, saying: “I don’t need your help walking home. Can you go now?”

Prosecutor Deborah Charles said the phone then went dead and when the friend of the victim tried to call her again the call went unanswered.

The girl had been dragged into a secluded area in Pencester Court and raped by both men..who only fled the scene when the mobile phone lit up.

Earlier, the judge commended case officer DC Joanne Bird and colleague DC Julian Skeeth for their ”thorough and painstaking” investigation.

The court heard how DC Skeeth trawled through footage from 84 separate cameras dotted about the town to map the pair stalking their victim.

Tofoi had told the jury how after going home that night he had read an account of the rape on KentOnline and he and his friend bought tickets to travel to Romania.

Hirjanu, of no fixed address, was jailed for 13 years and three months and told he would also have to serve another three years on licence when he is finally released.

The judge said he still posed a risk to women telling him: “You have shown no remorse and no insight into your crime. You have done nothing but blame your victim and your co-accused.”
