Polly Troth of Dover and Daniel Millington to take on Pilgrims Cycle Challenge on a tandem from Canterbury

A schoolteacher is going on a 45-mile tandem ride in memory of her grandmother.

Polly Troth, with her boyfriend Daniel Millington, both from Dover, will take on the annual Pilgrims Cycle Challenge on Sunday.

Ms Troth, 28, said: "Our motto is ‘teamwork makes the dream work’ and I’m sure it’ll be put to the test."

Ms Troth is doing this in memory of her grandmother Joan Troth who was cared for by the Pilgrims Hospices.

She died at the start of this year from cancer, aged 82.

She said: "“Nana was born and bred in Canterbury and was cared for at the hospice there.

" I had an image in my head that made me think of a hospice as a sad place to be, but I could not have been more wrong.

It was bright and cheerful, with welcoming care staff and volunteers.

" The nurses were amazing and we were completely overwhelmed with the level of care mygrandmother received.

"The staff were absolutely flawless and treated her and our family with compassion, kindness and love throughout her time in the hospice: as they do with the many families who need their help.

"Although we are regular cyclists, we’ve never undertaken such a personal challenge.”

The couple's bicycle was custom-built by Mr Millington, 32, using pieces from donated bikes.

They will go on a circular route connecting the Ashford and Canterbury hospices.

The couple have passed their original £300 target, having achieved £430 by today (Monday) and hope to raise £500.

Ms Troth's dad Ashley Troth and his brother Russell are more seasoned cyclists and will complete a 100-mile route.

This connects the three hospices at Canterbury, Ashford and Margate and also goes via Dover.

You can donate to the tandem ride via justgiving.com/fundraising/danandpolly.

There is still time to register for the Pilgrims Hospices Cycle Challenge, which also has a 75-mile ride.

The event starts and finishes at the Sports Pavilion at the University of Kent, Canterbury.
