Drivers left stranded in floodwater in Minnis Lane, River, during heavy rain

Two people were left knee high in water as heavy rain today caused havoc.

Firefighters were called to help the pair in two separate cars, which broke down in floodwater in Minnis Lane, River.

There were also a fallen tree blocking the road.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Crews moved the tree and pulled the cars out of the water, allowing them to be reached by breakdown recovery vehicles."

One fire engine was called out at exactly 11.27am and the crew's task was finished by 12.49pm.

The incident was part of wider mayhem from constant heavy rain and strong winds.

Hogbrook Hill in Alkham was left looking like a river, with water completely covering the road.

Drivers on the A20 near Capel-le-Ferne faced dangerous conditions with spray also reducing visibility.

Coasguards and the RNLI had been called in and the other two were saved.

The Met Office had put out a yellow weather warning, forecasting gale force winds and heavy rain from last night onwards.

Gusts were forecast at 40 to 45mph inland and 50 to 55mph in coastal areas.

Temperature for today were also forecast at 4C, when the average for April is 15.

For example an early morning Dover Priory to London Victoria train was cancelled and one from Dover to Cannon Street could only start from Ashford International.

The winter-like weather has come less that two weeks after the hottest days in April for 70 years, with temperatures nearing 30C.
