Dover Athletic manager Chris Kinnear bitterly disappointed after dramatic loss to Cambridge United in FA Cup First Round replay

Chris Kinnear admitted to bitter disappointment after crashing out of the FA Cup against Cambridge United having been seconds from glory.

The Dover boss said it felt as through Whites had 'won it twice' after seeing a 1-0 lead courtesy of Ricky Miller cancelled-out in stoppage-time at the end of 90 minutes and then a 2-1 lead in extra-time, earned by a thumping Aswad Thomas goal, overhauled by three goals in the final 10 minutes.

Kinnear said: "We're very disappointed, letting them back in both times, and by mistakes, but they are a decent side. They have had a bit of an iffy run but they have got good players all around.

"Everyone is disappointed in the changing room but we have got to move on.

"Of course the players were distraught. We said to them well done in the respect that you got close to them, but don't let it drag you down.

"Of course everyone, me, the players and staff is bitterly disappointed to have come so close but that's football, it's a live match on TV which is amazing, we were close, but we have got to move on."

Dover were dreaming of a second round tie at home to Coventry when the game entered stoppage-time but when Luke Berry's 20-yard free-kick squirmed away from Whites keeper Mitch Walker, Mark Roberts pounced to ram home the equaliser and send the tie to extra-time.

KInnear said: "They have thrown people forward and sometimes you hang on, other times you don't. They just nicked it.

"The annoying one is the first one in injury time. You've won the game then really. If we hadn't spilled it or if someone had reacted (to the loose ball)... if, if, if.

"Most of their goals were mistakes and I didn't think they were very good."

Kinnear did however admit Cambridge were probably worthier winners, adding: "They are a decent side and had lots of chances, they hit the woodwork several times, but when you're that close you just hang on."

Dover had less than 41 hours of recovery time before they host Guiseley in the National League on Saturday (3pm) and Kinnear said: "We've got to get it out of our system, what are you going to do? Have a sulk or move on? You have got to move on.

"The only thing is it's 41 hours until the next game, that's not easy for anybody, but that's the way it is. We just have to roll our sleeves up and get on with it and not feel sorry for themselves.

"Guiseley will be rubbing their hands together. We've still got a lot to play for this season, it's still very early. We haven't embarrassed ourselves and we almost won the game."
