Dover Athletic skipper Mitch Brundle admits Whites are going through a challenging time

Mitch Brundle admits Dover might have to go back to basics to get their National League promotion push back on track.

Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat against Fylde meant it’s just one point out of the last nine for Chris Kinnear’s side who have slipped from first to sixth.

They are just two points adrift of new leaders Aldershot, but midfielder Brundle is keen the run, which he describes at the moment, as a blip, doesn’t become more damaging.

The Whites skipper said: “It’s a challenging time but in football you’re going to have ups and downs. We didn’t lose for 10 games, now we’ve lost two on the bounce but these are things you need to get over in a season.

“I think we have to go back to the basics, maybe we got carried away with the way we play but it’s something you have to look at, you have to look at everything, we’ll have to look back at the basics and see what’s going wrong.

“When I say basics I mean go back to the way we clear the ball. I think we’ve just gone a little bit away from little stuff like that. We have to look at something because we’ve lost two on the bounce.

“It might not be a lot but one change might just click us back into gear. It’s the nature of this league you have to overcome these obstacles and make sure you’re fit and focused and ready to go again.”

Before last Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Dagenham & Redbridge, Dover had gone 10 league games without defeat and Brundle says the squad remain confident of sustaining their promotion challenge.

He added: “We’re still up there and I’m sure there are a lot of other teams who would like to be where we are.

"This league is unforgiving, we just need to start another unbeaten run and then everyone will forget about these sort of days, they’ll say they were just blips in the season which everyone’s going to have.”
