Dover Athletic manager Chris Kinnear says Whites have come a long way in a short time ahead of Cambridge United FA Cup First Round tie

Chris Kinnear admits Dover are victims of their own success as they seek to write another chapter into their rich recent FA Cup history this weekend.

Victory at Burgess Hill last month ensured Dover’s fourth straight season in the first round proper and a trip to League 2 strugglers Cambridge United at the Cambs Glass Stadium on Saturday (3pm).

Whites have gone from challenging in National League South to the upper echelons of the National League itself in the three-and-a-half years since Kinnear returned to Crabble. Such is their rise that Dover are only nine places below Cambridge in the ladder on the eve of the tie and a Whites victory on Saturday would barely register as a shock as they seek a repeat of their memorable runs to the third round in 2011 and 2015 when they were beaten by Huddersfield and Crystal Palace respectively.

Kinnear said: “The last few years we’ve done well in the FA Cup and, yes, it’s (the game) definitely winnable.

“We’re in there with some massive clubs. We’ve come a long way in the last three or four years and look where we are now – going to Cambridge and expecting to get a result there.” He added: “I think, yes, we are victims of our success. People expect us to beat the top sides now and it’s not a surprise when we do.

“People forget the type of players we’ve got and what they are on compared to all the (bigger clubs) but what we will get from them is 100% and we can’t ask any more than that.”

Dover suffered a 4-1 home league defeat to Tranmere on Saturday but Kinnear said: “Hopefully, we can put in a performance like we have in the three or four games (before that). We move on and we’ll be ready for Saturday.”

Sammy Moore has not been given permission to play by Leyton Orient and Tyrone Marsh (knee) misses out but Richard Orlu and Chris Kinnear Jr are in contention after injury.
