Dover Athletic manager Chris Kinnear proud of recovery to beat Guiseley in League after loss to Cambridge United in FA Cup

Delighted manager Chris Kinnear admitted he was concerned Dover might not have recovered from their Thursday night Cup exploits before they overcame Guiseley on Saturday.

Whites were dragged into extra-time by League 2 Cambridge in the dying seconds and eventually went out 4-2, finishing the First Round replay dead on their feet.

Kinnear however made four outfield changes which paid dividends as his side overcame the National League strugglers 2-0 to stay within three points of the top-two.

Kinnear said: "We were two minutes away from being in the next round of the FA Cup, how unlucky is that?

"We could have had a load of sulking players here but we couldn't be more proud of them really, you could see they applied themselves great and we could have won by more against a good side who have got themselves together - they'll beat lots of people."

He admitted: "I thought with less than 48 hours rest it was going to be a massive feat for us to even stay in the game. I was more than a little bit worried but it was worth it - what a great day."

Dover were cheered on by a crowd of more than 3,000 on the club's Family & Diversity Day and Kinnear admitted they played their part in the win on a wet and windy day at Crabble.

He said: "It was nice to see so many kids, they loved it, it was perfect. It couldn't have been better.

"I wasn't the happiest about playing the game but it was something that had to be done and it was a great day.

"The club is trying to get local people interested. Hopefully some of those kids will have had a great day and will try and talk their parents into bringing them back."

He added: "I'd like to think that this isn't the end of what we're going to achieve but the beginning of another chapter. With the facilities we've got now it's getting better and better."

The only low of the day was top-scorer Ricky Miller picking up his fifth booking of the season meaning he will miss Tuesday night's visit of Woking.

Kinnear said: "We rested Ross Lafayette thinking something like that might happen so it's helped us that he hasn't had to play, he was struggling with a little bit of an ankle problem.

"We gave a few of the players a bit of a rest and we've come through, it worked really well."

Moses Emmanuel was one of those drafted in and scored one, or both goals, depending on whether you listen to him or Miller, and Kinnear claimed: "I'm really pleased for Mo, he's kept his head down, he's scored a goal, caused them problems, he could have had more.

"Hopefully he can keep doing things like that. It helps with our squad. Hopefully we can push on from here."
