Peterborough target Ricky Miller not guaranteed to start for Dover Athletic at Macclesfield

Amid more speculation about the future of Ricky Miller, Dover boss Chris Kinnear admits he doesn’t know if he will start the striker on Saturday.

Miller has scored 16 goals in his last 10 appearances and 23 in all competitions this season but missed Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Woking after collecting his fifth booking of the campaign against Guiseley on Saturday – his 16th straight start.

The last time Miller was suspended, following a red card against Boreham Wood in August, he subsequently spent four games on the bench, one of them as an unused sub.

Kinnear joked “Ricky who?” after being asked about the impact of the 27-year-old missing the Woking game – which was won by a Ross Lafayette double and a second goal in as many games for the recalled Moses Emmanuel.

With testing trips to Macclesfield on Saturday (3pm) and Sutton on Tuesday (7.45pm), Kinnear admitted: “I don’t know if he’ll be playing, I haven’t even thought about it.

“We’ve never been a one-man side, though. We have lost four good players in the summer – Stefan Payne, Nicky Deverdics, Sean Raggett and Liam Bellamy – and we have not replaced them with big names. We have just continued on because everybody here has got ambition.”

He added: “It does help when players look at the new stand and the changing rooms now and it gives them that belief that the club wants to go places – it’s down to the players to show they do, too.”

Peterborough are the latest club to publicly discuss Miller with their director of football, Barry Fry, claiming this week: “We have been watching him. He’s a goalscorer and we are always interested in goalscorers. That’s all at the moment, though. We are keeping tabs on five strikers and want to sign two.”

Manager Grant McCann added: “We have monitored Miller but we have a list of players we are monitoring as long as my arm.”

Kinnear said: “It’s up to Barry what he says, he says a lot of things. I played for him at Barnet for a while and heard him say a lot of things in the past. ”

Dover lie sixth in National League, just three points off second but Kinnear claimed: “It’s nice to have picked up the six league points we have this week.

“We could have melted – a lot of lads have played in all the games and the extra-time.

“It’s not even December yet and we’ve played 21 games – it’s ridiculous.”
