Dover Athletic striker Ricky Miller reported to be subject of a bid from Bristol Rovers on transfer deadline day

Speculation is rife about the future of Ricky Miller and whether he will remain at Dover after the Football League transfer window closes at 11pm tonight.

Miller is the leading scorer in the Vanarama National League with Saturday's double in the 3-1 win against Chester taking him to 27 league goals for the season. Miller netted 20 last term after arriving following his release by Luton.

The 27-year-old has been linked with the likes of League 1 Peterborough this month, though Gillingham's interest is understood to have cooled with the departure of boss Justin Edinburgh.

In recent days League 1 Bristol Rovers have emerged as potential suitors with top-scorer Matty Taylor swapping the Memorial Ground for cross-town rivals Bristol City on Tuesday afternoon after the Ashton Gate side triggered a release clause.

A report in the Bristol press on Tuesday morning suggested The Gas had tabled a bid for Miller as his replacement, but KentOnline understands no formal written offers had been received as of 5pm.

Dover's National League promotion-rivals Lincoln and Forest Green Rovers are believed to have approached Whites regarding a possible transfer but chairman Jim Parmenter vowed not to sell him to anyone that is not an 'established league club.'

Whites chairman Mr Parmenter and the Crabble board faced the dilemma of whether to cash-in on their prized asset now, knowing he could leave for free when his contract is up at the end of the season, or hope his goals will help Dover secure a return to the play-offs and potentially help ensure promotion to the Football League.

Mr Parmenter said earlier this month: “It would take an extraordinary offer for Ricky Miller being submitted to even trigger discussions about a transfer.

"I previously released a statement saying that we would not sell him to anyone other than an established Football League club and that remains the case.”

Dover's definition of extraordinary is believed to be north of £250,000 which is understood to be at least twice the figure their non-league rivals are dangling.

Speaking after the Chester game Whites boss Chris Kinnear said: “Noone has made an offer for (Miller) in the Football League (and) he won’t go to anyone in this league.

"You know as much as I do. We haven’t had an offer so it’s irrelevant.”

Dover are not governed by the same window and are free to sign players after 11pm and Kinnear added: “We are talking to players. There could be some coming in, we’re trying to work something out.”
