Dover Athletic boss Mitch Brundle praises young duo Andi Janjeva and Freddie Oliver with promotion-chasing National League South side Oxford City next up

Manager Mitch Brundle has praised the impact young duo Andi Janjeva and Freddie Oliver have made since they came into Dover’s first-team squad.

Former Watford defender Janjeva, 20, and 18-year-old midfielder Oliver started both of Whites’ National League South games over the Easter weekend.

“Andi’s done fantastically since he came in,” said Brundle, whose side are 18th - eight points clear of the relegation zone - with four matches left.

“Freddie is starting to find his feet and he’s getting fitter, which is even better for him performance-wise.

“He sits in front of that back-four fantastically.

"He just allows people to be free and more attacking. He’s reliable.

“He sits in front and doesn’t go wandering so that allows you to have Higgsy [Jordan Higgs] more advanced and Marts [skipper Lee Martin] more advanced. He screens the back four, so they’re not so isolated.

“It’s something that we hadn’t had, really, and allows us to free the more technically skilful players. He’s done fantastically well.

"Hopefully, he can carry it on.”

Second-placed Dartford completed the double over Whites on Easter Monday, earning a 2-1 win. Striker Harvey Bradbury and substitute Luke Allen struck for Alan Dowson’s men while Higgs replied for Dover.

That came after a goalless draw at Crabble against Welling on Good Friday.

Young defender Harrison Byford has returned from his loan at relegated Isthmian South East outfit Faversham, although he didn’t feature in either of Whites’ previous two squads.

Brundle said: “That’s the best thing at the minute because it’s getting towards the end of the season and everyone is fit.

“Everyone’s trying to fight for their contracts for next year. We’ve had a full-strength squad.”

One area Brundle will be keen to add to his squad this summer, though, will be up front where Dover have largely lacked the cutting edge required.

“That’s correct,” he noted. “We’ve known that for a long time and we haven’t been able to get another one in.

“We’ve asked some of the other boys to step up. We scored three goals against Braintree [in a 3-1 success] and Friday was another game where we could have got another couple of goals, but fair play to Welling.

“That point, at the end of the day, was another point in the right direction.”

Dover welcome third-placed Oxford City to Crabble this Saturday before a Tuesday trip to face basement boys Concord.
