Flower pot yobs smash cars as calls grow for more police in Faversham

Feckless vandals who smashed flower pots over cars in a town blighted by antisocial behaviour have sparked renewed calls for more police.

Concerning images show the aftermath left in the wake of yobs who rained down the planters on two vehicles in Faversham over the weekend.

Some residents say their homes and cars were recently splattered with eggs, while others have suffered irritating door knock-and-runs.

The latest spate of antisocial behaviour in Newton Road and Abbey Street comes after a perceived increase in mindless criminality across the town.

Speaking after the two cars were smashed up, one victim said they fear the area is taking a turn for the worse.

“We do need more action taken, it feels like whoever is doing this knows they can get away with it,” they said.

“Even if you do catch them, what then?

“I’ve suffered from people being anti-social towards me and my home and it’s not pleasant, it puts people off and part of why people love Faversham is because of how beautiful it is.

“But it won’t stay that way for long if we don’t take control of the situation.”

Town councillor Rob Crayford (Lab), who represents St Ann’s Ward, said more crime prevention methods are needed.

“I’ve had residents contact me and I believe there has been a rise in anti-social behaviour,” he said.

“Not only in this instance but other issues such as door-knocking and graffiti.

“I feel there needs to be a great police presence in Faversham and I’m going to write to the Police and Crime Commissioner to highlight these issues.”

The renewed calls for help come amid a wave of comparatively low-level but upsetting offending.

In July last year, vandals sent a bench carved from a tree as part of upgrades to Faversham Recreation Ground up in flames - leaving many devastated.

The bench, which was installed as part of a heritage-led regeneration scheme, had only been in place for a couple of years.

Several cars were also damaged as vandals rampaged through Central car park in Leslie Smith Drive earlier that month.

And pensioner Sue Medhurst shared her story in November as councillors looked to tackle a “plague of graffiti”.

Mrs Medhurst had been living with the word ‘rapist’ scrawled across the side of her house, with the woman hitting out at the tastelessness of the matter.

Insp Vanessa Foster from Swale’s Neighbourhood Task Force, said: “Kent Police does not underestimate the impact that anti-social behaviour can have on a community.

“During the month of December we received eight calls relating to ASB issues in the Abbey ward. We work closely with partner agencies and organisations, including local schools, to ensure there is a joined-up approach in tackling ASB, and also have dedicated beat officers who are a single point of contact for communities where residents can raise issues which are affecting them.

“Faversham is a safe place for people to work, live and visit and anyone with concerns can raise these to the local beat officers who will respond appropriately and will escalate these reports if required.”
