Forward-thinking midfielder Billy Bingham has revealed some of the personal reasons behind his decision to drop into part-time football and sign for Faversham.

Bingham has linked up with the Lilywhites in the Southern Counties East Premier Division after stepping away from the full-time game at National League Bromley.

The 33-year-old former Gillingham player featured more than 100 times for Bromley and helped them win the FA Trophy in 2022 - but is now playing Step 5 football.

On his four-division drop, Bingham said: “This club’s definitely going upwards.

“From a personal point of view, I didn’t want to be caught out at 36 or 37, playing full-time football and leaving my family stuck.

“Dropping down to part-time football, allowing me to build something on the side, works well for me and my family.

“I’ve got a couple of friends here and it’s a good opportunity for me to start my next career and play football on the side.”

Faversham have recorded successive big wins since Bingham came into Sammy Moore’s team, earning a 5-0 weekend home victory against Fisher before Tuesday’s 4-0 triumph at Salters Lane in the league against Bearsted which moved them into the play-off places.

Bingham admitted: “It’s been really good to start like that - 5-0 and 4-0.

“The boys finished them off in the first half on Tuesday, really, and it made the second half pretty comfortable. Long may it continue.

“If we continue like this, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t have a successful season. Hopefully, we do well in the FA Vase.”

As well as league glory, Town manager Moore has been vocal about his ambition for the club to go all the way in the Vase this season.

“We should be going into every game to win it, really,” said Bingham, who has already tasted Wembley glory. “But we’ll see how we get on.”

Stefan Payne - one of Bingham’s team-mates who he already knew - bagged a brace against Bearsted while fellow frontman Warren Mfula also struck twice in front of a crowd of 332.

Impressive winger Ashley Miller appeared to score himself, as well, before half-time when Town were 3-0 ahead as the ball then ricocheted back into play off part of the frame inside the net. But the referee deemed the ball to have struck the base of the post.

Payne was also at the double against Fisher.

Billy Bennett, Mfula and Jefferson Aibangbee claimed the other goals while under-23s keeper Lewis Briggs kept successive clean sheets with Bailey Vose unavailable due to work commitments and newly-signed Hafed Al-Droubi ill.

Bingham is yet to score from midfield but vowed: “There will be a goal coming soon! But I’m just enjoying playing and winning.”

Town will aim to build upon back-to-back league wins when they visit Sutton Athletic this Saturday.

“I’ve not been there before,” revealed Bingham.

“I’m not sure what to expect yet but, if we turn up and perform the way we have been, that’s all we can do.”

Midfielders Kieron McCann and Mo Kamara have departed Faversham.
