Faversham Town boss Ray Turner says his players are still learning how to cope with being top of Ryman League, Division 1 South

Ray Turner says his Faversham squad need to learn to deal with life at the top before they lose their lofty standing in Ryman League, Division 1 South.

The Lilywhites swept to the top on November 4, taking advantage of the inactivity of pace-setters Burgess Hill Town due to the Sussex side’s cup commitments but since then have taken one point from six in the league and conceded 11 goals in three games in all competitions.

Town had to salvage a last-minute point at basement-boys Walton Casuals on Saturday, after allowing a 2-0 half-time lead to slip to a 3-2 deficit.

Manager Turner said: “We were excellent in the first-half but gave them a route back into the game.

“They pegged us back and I was disappointed with the goals we conceded. It was looking like a bad day but we managed to go back to the good things we had been doing and earn what turned out to be a good point, away from home.

“They are a vastly improved side and there’s no way they will be in the bottom three come the end of the season.”

He added: “Even though we got a point, I was as angry as I’ve been for a long time after the game. We can’t expect to stay up there all the while we’re conceding so many goals.”

Town have a two-point lead ahead of Saturday’s trip to Worthing, with a home game against third-placed Folkestone to follow a week later.

Turner said: “Saturday is big as we need it to set up the next game. It is vital, you don’t want to be going into that game (against Folkestone) with one or two points from three games. It’s important that we come back and win.”

He admitted: “Being top possibly could have had a psychological impact. A lot of our players are not used to being up there. They need to learn to be front-runners and get the results to stay up there.

“There is a risk that we won’t be top if we don’t win this weekend. As it is, at the moment, Burgess Hill would go 10 points clear if they win their games in hand. We need to solidify our position.”
