Eurotunnel passengers in Folkestone face five-hour wait

Eurotunnel passengers are facing hours of delays due to "extreme temperatures".

Le Shuttle this afternoon stated on its website "unprecedented temperatures" are affecting air-conditioning on carriages and declared it is unable to check in some customers.

Staff have been handing water out to customers, but the ferries are unable to take any passengers stuck for several hours in temperatures hitting the high 30s.

One customer said she had a wedding cake that was melting in the sweltering heat.

Now Eurotunnel is offering full refunds to customers.

It said in a tweet:

The firm also advised those planning to use the service should stock up on water prior to arrival.

"The prolonged and unprecedented temperatures in the South East of England are affecting the air conditioning on board our shuttles," its statement says.

"Due to the high level of traffic booked, we are currently unable to check-in any customers arriving more than two hours before their booked crossing time. "We strongly recommend that you stock up with water prior to arriving at our Folkestone Terminal.

It added throughout July and August passengers should check-in on time for booked departures - no earlier than two hours and no later than 45 minutes before.

Ticket sales for travel today are no longer being sold, according to Eurotunnel.
