Folkestone’s Hugh Bernard admits he is having the time of his life after being called up to the England under-19 squad for a five-match series against Australia.

The 18-year-old fast bowler has been included in the 16-man squad for 50-over games against the Aussies next month.

Bernard toured Western Australia with England U19s earlier this year and now the Kent Academy graduate has another chance to shine in Ashes summer.

He said: "It’s great news. I got the call on Saturday and I’m delighted to be selected again. It’s a chance to showcase my skills on the big stage.

"I’m looking forward to it. We’re playing in our own backyard and they’ve got to get used to our conditions. I back our team to win, 100%.

"Hopefully, I can play a big part in the series. I took the chance I got back in Australia and I’ve been in pretty good form since then.

"There is rivalry there. It’s poignant because our senior team is playing a home Ashes series so there’s a lot on it. People will be a bit more aware of what we’re doing."

The series starts at South Northumberland on August 11 before matches at Chesterfield on August 14, Derby on August 17, Leicester on August 20 and Worcester on August 22.
