A former Ebbsfleet United player has been jailed for five years after being convicted of rape.

Patrick Ada, 27, was playing for League Two club Burton Albion at the time of the sex attack in February.

Cameroon-born Ada joined Ebbsfleet pre-season and was signed on a fixed-term agreement pending his court appearance.

However, the Stonebridge Road club has now issued a statement to say his contract has been terminated.

Ada was found guilty of rape on Tuesday after a trial at Woolwich Crown Court where the judge was said to have remarked on the defender's "arrogance" and lack of respect for his victim.

A statement on Ebbsfleet's club website read: "In reaching our decision to offer him a contract we took the view that any individual is innocent until proven guilty.

"It was on that basis that the contract was offered and agreed. In terms with this agreement his contract has now been terminated."
