Motorists warned over phone use after driver caught photographing A2 crash

A motorist has been sent a notice of intended prosecution after an officer allegedly spotted him at the wheel capturing the aftermath of last week’s fatal A2 collision on his mobile phone.

HGV driver Mark Sharp, 46, died at the scene of the smash, which happened on the coast-bound carriageway near Dartford at 5.10am last Monday.

The five car pile-up happened between Leyton Cross and junction 2 of the M25.

Police are now reminding motorists that the use of mobile phones while driving is illegal, including the taking of photos, and action will be taken against anyone caught.

Inspector Sam Pearson from the Roads Policing Unit said: “Whether you are talking, texting or taking a photo, you are still using a mobile phone which means you are not concentrating on the road ahead.

“The consequences of this not only include the fine, but you could also cause a serious collision.

“There is no doubt that if you use a phone your reaction times are impaired and you are more likely to cause injury to yourself or others.

“We will carry on taking action against drivers who choose to ignore this.”

Officers can issue drivers with a £60 fine and three points on their licence if they are seen using a phone while driving.

Those who receive a notice of intended prosecution may be offered an educational course, a £100 fine and three points, or the option to go to magistrates court.
