Picnics and parties near you in honour of the Queen for her 90th birthday

It is going to be a celebration to remember as thousands gather to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Young and old alike will be enjoying street parties and picnics over three days of festivities in honour of the country’s longest reigning monarch.

With Queen Elizabeth II being such an animal lover, even the dogs and cats at Battersea Brands Hatch will be joining in the fun.

Special guests at a street party in Community Square, Gravesend, tomorrow (Friday)will be Gravesham people who are also celebrating their 90th birthdays.

Children from the borough have also been invited and will be entertained with music and refreshments from 11.30am.

The party is invitation only but spectators are welcome to add to the flag-waving atmosphere.

A patriotic party with scones, jam and lashings of cream will be hosted in the grounds of ellenor’s Lions House Hospice in Coldharbour Road, Northfleet, from noon tomorrow.

Live music and craft stalls will also keep visitors entertained. Entry is £3.50, which includes a drink on arrival. Cream teas with scones, finger sandwiches and fresh strawberries are also priced at £3.50.

How about a picnic in the park? Swanscombe and Greenhithe Town Council has organised free celebrations in Swanscombe Park and Knockhall Park from noon to 2pm on Saturday.

The fun includes children’s entertainers Micky the Magician and Mrs Roundabout, outdoor fitness classes, a royal-themed teddy bears’ picnic and a ceremony unveiling commemorative benches.

The Great Big Queen’s Birthday Picnic will see up to 250 children aged four to 11 and their families enjoying an afternoon of fun at the open-air theatre in Dartford’s Central Park from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday. Activities will include birds of prey demonstrations, circus skills, punch and judy shows, crafts and face painting.

Fort Gardens in Gravesend will ring out with the sounds of the annual Fusion Festival, with music and dance performances from the ultimate Queen tribute band Real Magic, Four by Four Bhangra, Phase 5 steel band and Uzambezi on Saturday.

The free community event, which has been organised by CohesionPlus and lasts from 1pm to 5.30pm, also includes a food zone and creative arts zone. Visitors are urged to bring along a Union Jack to wave.

The Queen has been patron of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home for almost 60 years and its Brands Hatch branch is inviting visitors to enjoy a tea party and meet its own royal residents from 10.30am to 2pm on Saturday.

There will also be children’s crafts, refreshments, and staff on hand to talk about volunteering and fostering. Admission to the tea party is free, but usual charges apply to visit the rest of the centre.

Afternoon tea with live entertainment will be served by the Gravesend and District Osteoporosis Support Group at Christ Church Hall in Old Road East, Gravesend, from 2.30pm on Saturday. Admission is £3 for adults but is free for accompanied children.

All things bright and beautiful will adorn the Cobham Gardeners’ Society Summer Show, also on Saturday.

Since April, the parish council has run a Front of House floral competition as part of the birthday celebrations and those with the best gardens, window boxes and hanging baskets will win prizes at this annual show and plant sale at the Meadow Room in The Street, Cobham. It starts at 2pm.

Higham Recreation Ground in School Lane is the venue for music, stalls, parades and children’s entertainment from 4pm on Saturday.

The Royal British Legion is hosting a Poppy Picnic in Fort Gardens, Gravesend, on Sunday. There will be vintage vehicles, live music, craft and charity stalls from 12pm.

Entry is by donations and the New Tavern Fort magazines and Chantry Heritage Centre will also be open.

The open-air concert from the bandstand will see performances by Paul Cook Blues Band, Ryan Hornett, Manfred Leeman, The Midnight Bluez Band, Roger Humphries and The Devil’s Right Band.

A knees-up will be enjoyed by senior citizens at a vintage tea party at the Swanscombe and Greenhithe Royal British Legion in Greenhithe, from 1pm on Sunday.

The celebrations continue in Cobham on Sunday with the return of the Garden Safari.

This is the perfect opportunity to be legitimately nosey with 18 private gardens in the village opening up their gates to welcome visitors.

Those taking part include Sole Street Station and the National Trust house Owletts. The safari starts at 11.30am from Sole Street House with additional attractions including refreshments, handmade terracotta ware and plant sales, and a silent auction of local, framed photographs dating from 1950.

Cobham Brownies will be holding a teddy bears’ picnic at 12.30pm in Sole Street House garden. Children are welcome to bring along their own teddy to meet up with the Brownies’ teddy bears and make each bear their very own crown.

Also on Sunday, Meopham will mark the momentous occasion with a Picnic on the Green from 2pm to 5pm. Families and friends are welcome to the free event which will include a magician, balloon man and face painting. Bring your own picnic but there will also be a bar, refreshments and ice cream for sale.

There will be a children’s competition to make a royal crown – bring your own decorated headpiece.
