Woman, 22, admits killing father

A YOUNG mother has admitted killing her father during a violent incident at the home she shared with him.

Hazel Thomas, 22, of Lorton Close, Gravesend, wept as she told a court that she was still pleading not guilty to the murder of Stephen Akers, but was admitting manslaughter.

Andrew Munday, QC, prosecuting at Maidstone Crown Court, said the Crown was prepared to accept her plea, made on the basis that she denied committing any act intending to kill Mr Akers or to cause him grievous bodily harm.

In a statement she described him arriving home on October 3 last year after making aggressive telephone calls to her, and having to crouch in a ball as he attacked her.

She recalled him causing an injury to her mouth but had no recollection of what followed, or who first picked up a knife.

In the statement, she conceded that her father received a single and fatal stab wound in the context of the violence.

Her lawyer, Jeremy Dein, QC, asked that sentencing should be adjourned to enable reports to be completed.

Thomas remains on bail, to live at an undisclosed address out of the Gravesend area, until sentencing takes place at the crown court on October 17.

Judge Andrew Patience, QC, said the fact that he was allowing her to remain on bail was no indication at to how the case would finally be dealt with.
