A late penalty denied Ebbsfleet victory over title-chasing Boreham Wood on Saturday.

The Fleet's play-off bid was all but over going into the game but the draw now means Whitehawk need just a point from their final two games against Hemel Hempstead and Havant while the Fleet would need to win all three of their remaining matches to stand any chance.

The point was not much good for Wood, either, as they now trail leaders Bromley - who have a game in hand - by two points at the top of the table.

Fleet keeper Brandon Hall had to turn a Josh Hill header over the bar before the home side took the lead just before half-time. Danny Kedwell and Matt Godden combined to set up Cunnington, who headed beyond keeper James Russell.

After the break, Luke Rooney shot wide before he was replaced by Michael West, while Russell denied Kedwell and then turned away Cunnington's shot.

Their failure to take these chances was always like to come back and haunt the Fleet and so it proved with five minutes let. The Fleet failed to clear the ball during a goalmouth scramble and the foul on substitute Charlie Walker was correctly punished with the award of a penalty.

Ben Nunn converted the spot-kick beyond Hall while Walker missed a golden opportunity late on to snatch the points for the visitors when he fired over.

Ebbsfleet: Hall, Fish, Palmer, T Lewis, Acheampong, Bonner, Godden, S Lewis, Kedwell (Marsh 83mins), Cunnington, Rooney (West 65mins). Subs not used: Turner, Clark, Johnson. Attendance: 790.
