Ebbsfleet United midfielder Jordan Parkes relieved to end his goal drought with two against Concord Rangers

Jordan Parkes admitted it was a relief to end his three-month wait for a goal on Boxing Day.

The Ebbsfleet midfielder netted twice in their 4-2 win over Concord Rangers, taking his season's tally into double-figures.

But with eight of those goals coming in the former Hemel Hempstead captain's first 10 games for the Fleet, the subsequent wait from September 19 had dragged for Parkes.

"It was a bit of a relief," he said. "I started the season well with eight in 10 and then I’ve had a bit of a barren patch.

"You start to get a bit frustrated. You think ‘what am I doing wrong?’ but you’ve got to keep plugging away.

"I’ve been unlucky with chances and I’ve missed a couple of sitters, keepers have made good saves and you think ‘what have I got to do to score again?’

"I tried not to think about it too much. I’m getting chances, that’s the main thing, and on Saturday I’ve managed to put them away."

Parkes' first goal was a low left-footed strike inside the near post to put Ebbsfleet 2-0 up.

He said: "It felt good. It wasn’t even a good strike but I’ll take it, it’s in the back of the net and it was a relief."

Parkes, a free-kick specialist during his time at Hemel, scored one to make it 3-0 early in the second half. His curling effort from near the left-hand touchline swirled over Concord keeper Ben McNamara and went all the way in.

He admitted: "I don’t know if I meant to put it in the top corner. It was in a wide position and I just wanted to wrap the ball across the face of the goal. I was aiming at the goal but the fact it went in the top corner was bonus.

"It’s a tough one in those positions because the keeper doesn’t know whether to come or go and if you can get that whip across there, it’s playing on his uncertainty.

"It’s that little corridor, sometimes the defender puts it in or one of your attackers puts it in or it just misses everyone and goes in.

"The wind held it up a little bit and it managed to come back in again but I’ll take it, definitely."

He added: "It was a relief to get off the mark again. Twenty goals is my target for the season so to get 10 by the halfway point is good.

"Daryl McMahon’s a very good man-manager. Training’s always spot-on every day and it’s a really good environment here.

"Obviously my game does revolve around scoring and creating goals so when that’s not happening, your confidence can take a little bit of a knock.

"But I’ve been in this situation before and hopefully now I’ll kick back on again."
