Ebbsfleet United 3 East Thurrock United 0 FA Cup match report

Ebbsfleet will host Doncaster Rovers of League 1 in the FA Cup first round after knocking out East Thurrock at the second attempt.

Two goals in three second-half minutes effectively decided the fourth qualifying round replay and earned the Fleet their first crack at Football League since 2012.

A third goal with the final kick of the match added gloss to the scoreline.

Danny Kedwell and Danny Mills started up front together for the first time as boss Daryl McMahon made two changes from the goalless draw in Essex on Saturday.

Mills took Myles Weston's place and fit-again Andy Drury came into midfield with Anthony Cook the man to make way. Antonio German was left out of the squad altogether.

East Thurrock, who were unchanged, almost stunned their hosts with a goal inside 15 seconds when a cross/shot from the left was almost headed in at the far post.

But the home side were soon into the ascendancy, trying to move the ball quickly in an attempt to stretch the Rocks and create gaps.

Sean Shields was their best outlet down the right wing, putting a couple of good crosses into the box before Kedwell swapped passes with Drury and shot wide.

The next time Shields got forward, he cut back onto his left foot and swung over a cross which Kedwell nodded over.

Jack Powell's corner from the right was met by Sam Magri on the run and his header forced goalkeeper Lukas Lidakevicius to turn the ball against the crossbar and behind.

But much of Ebbsfleet's play was in front of East Thurrock, who were content to get 10 players behind the ball and defend their penalty area.

Powell drove another right-wing corner to the near post and Kedwell's glancing touch almost carried the ball over the line.

But Magri's frustration mirrored that of the home supporters when Powell ignored the full-back, who was waiting in space, and ran into a cul-de-sac of defenders instead.

Encouraged by how things were going, East Thurrock ventured forward. Lewis Smith had penalty appeals waved away after going down under Magri's challenge, before Montel Agyemang's deflected shot from the right-hand side of the box forced a save from Nathan Ashmore.

Fleet were again guilty of over-playing in the penalty area when Drury collected Jack Connors' pass, chose not to shoot from 20 yards and threaded the ball on to Powell, whose effort was gathered by Lidakevicius.

Shields' final cross of the first half was a deep one which Mills headed back into the danger zone although Drury's header was held easily.

When Mills was hauled down 20 yards out at the start of the second period, Powell whipped the free-kick wide of the far post. Kedwell then dug out a cross which Mills headed wide.

Ebbsfleet survived a major scare when Reece Harris' inswinging free-kick from wide on the right was allowed to bounce and the ball struck the far post.

Just a minute later, Fleet were in front, Drury volleying home Powell's corner from the right.

McLean had only been on the pitch three minutes when he made it 2-0, directing a clever header inside the far post after the excellent Shields, having been unable to cross with his right, chopped back and delivered with his left instead.

Powell went close with another free-kick and Magri then flew down the right only for Kedwell to miss his kick when the ball reached him inside the penalty area.

The goals certainly knocked the stuffing out of East Thurrock, who quickly made all three of their substitutions, and although right-back Ryan Sammon did well to wriggle past a couple of defenders, his driven cross/shot failed to find a team-mate in the middle.

At the other end, Ashmore dealt with a Smith strike from distance but Ebbsfleet had late chances to add to their tally.

Chris Bush almost forced the ball over the line after substitute Luke Coulson had broken at pace down the left, before Connors' teasing cross from the left almost found Kedwell on the slide.

Lidakevicius grabbed a Coulson shot at the second attempt, with Max Cornhill heading wide at the other end.

But the game had been won by then and Fleet, for whom Myles Weston scored in the fourth minute of added time, can now look forward to hosting what will be one of the ties of the first round on the weekend of November 4.
