Ebbsfleet United boss Daryl McMahon on the 2-1 win over Leyton Orient

A week is a long time in football - just ask Daryl McMahon.

Seven days on from seeing his side surrender a two-goal lead against Doncaster in the FA Cup, McMahon was faced with a sense of deja vu as Ebbsfleet went 2-0 up against Leyton Orient at the Kuflink Stadium.

But where they had collapsed to lose 6-2 to their League 1 visitors previously, Fleet never looked like letting this game slip, even though James Dayton scored let to set up a frantic finish.

Ebbsfleet deserved their win while Orient, who were relegated from League 2 last season, have now gone 11 games without a win in the National League.

McMahon said: "Lots of players had their best game of the season, on the telly, against a big club.

"We spoke before the game about learning from last week and being in the exact same situation and that’s how you win a game of football when you get into those positions.

"Orient didn’t really threaten us until they got the goal and then you do get balls into the box that can fall anywhere but the lads defended them very well.

"Our shape was very good all night. Yads (Yado Mambo) was excellent, dealing with Harrold and Mooney, who were playing League 1 or League 2 last year.

"We probably had seven or eight players who played in Conference South last year and I’d imagine they didn’t have any players who were playing in non-league last year.

"The gulf between the teams in terms of that is big but the performance on the pitch from us was excellent.

"We could have been three or four up when you look at the chances we had on the counter-attack.

"We played very well and to be fair to the lad for them, Dayton, who I thought was outstanding, it’s a worldie. There’s not a lot you can say to Ash (Nathan Ashmore) or the back four when someone hits it off his weaker foot from 25 yards into the side netting.

"I was right behind it and it was an arrow, a great strike, but we got the three points and we deserved them."
