Ebbsfleet United striker Dominic Samuel will prove handful once he gets used to team’s pattern of play, says manager Dennis Kutrieb

Ebbsfleet manager Dennis Kutrieb believes there’s more to come from striker Dominic Samuel.

The former Gillingham and Blackburn forward netted his second Fleet goal in last weekend’s stunning 4-1 National League victory at Oldham.

Samuel has added extra quality to Ebbsfleet’s attacking play so it’s no wonder that Kutrieb is delighted to have him on board after initially trying to secure his services in the summer.

“I was not surprised,” said Kutrieb. “That was the reason why we wanted to bring him in during the summer. It didn’t work out for us then but we finally got him.

“We can see already he will be a big help and a massive addition to our squad. I’m pleased that he’s with us and he can show what he is able to do.

“I’m pretty sure he will improve as he knows more and more and gets used to how we want to do things. I’m looking forward to [seeing] him as he will get better and better.”

Samuel scored a brilliant goal at Oldham. Collecting the ball in his own half, the 29-year-old drove forward and beat three players before confidently slotting home from the edge of the penalty area.

“It was a great goal,” admitted Kutrieb. “He already did the same run three times in the game before and was in a good situation to pass the ball.

“One was offside and one was a wrong decision but you could see him relentlessly working and he’s got the rewards for it.

“I was pretty happy that both strikers scored and Nathan Odokonyero came from the bench and scored as well. It was a pretty nice day for our strikers.”

So does the arrival of Samuel take some of the burden off Dominic Poleon?

“I think Dominic Poleon is always fighting against himself,” replied Kutrieb. “It’s not like he needs help, if he turns up then he will be fine.

“After his injury, maybe he felt a bit of the pressure from being back and everyone was relying on him. But we’ve got it right that he’s refocused and knows exactly what is important to his game and he is able to score.

“That’s what he’s done in the last two games, much better than the three games before. But it always helps when you have good players on the pitch, regardless of their position, you can see the whole squad at the moment is benefiting from that.”

There was also a second league goal for striker Nathan Odokonyero in the win at Oldham - a reward for a young player who has had more minutes than expected this season in testing circumstances.

The Fleet boss wants the promising forward to learn from the quality around him.

“He deserves his minutes and he’s played more than I [expected] for his development,” said Kutrieb.

“It helps if you’re not under too much pressure and can learn from other strikers, like we have now. Rakish Bingham is back in training, and with Poleon and Samuel, they are outstanding strikers who have seen pretty much everything.

“He can benefit a lot as a young striker to be a little bit in their shadow and then just come on and put the nail in the coffin, and that’s what he did on Saturday. That would be my perfect solution for him in the first season, going up levels, get some gametime and score goals without any pressure.

“But we were in a difficult position and we needed him more, he tried really hard and deserves a lot of credit for that. He always turned up and left everything on the pitch, he never got carried away and had the right work-rate. It’s the minimum why he deserves to be in the right place now and to get a nice goal.”

Ebbsfleet have the chance to complete the double over bottom side Kidderminster when they make the trip to Aggborough this Saturday. But after failing to collect wins over Oxford City and Maidenhead previously, Kutrieb isn’t fussed about where their opponents sit in the table.

“It's not so much about where other teams are in the league, it’s about what are we able to deliver on the pitch and if we understand the game and how to approach it,” he stressed.

“That’s what we’ve got to do this week, regardless of where the opponent is in the table, we’ve got to make sure we get our game ready for Saturday at 3pm.

“If we do like we did at Oldham or maybe even better then, of course, we have a good chance to win another game of football.”

It’s also a chance for Ebbsfleet to get successive league wins under their belts for the first time this season.

“This was the challenge from the first day of the season when we had a win-loss, win-loss, and our aim was always to get back-to-back wins,” added Kutrieb.

“Our aim is to get another win because we’ve been waiting for it since the beginning of the season.”
