Ebbsfleet United will not rush their search for a new manager.

Steve Brown was sacked as Fleet boss on Wednesday and caretaker manager Daryl McMahon led them to a 1-0 win over Hendon in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

McMahon will lead training at Cobdown this week while vice-chairman Peter Varney runs the rule over potential candidates to succeed Brown.

"I’ve had about 50 applications already," said Mr Varney. "We’re not going to rush it, we’re going to make the right decision.

"It’s great to see Daryl get a good start but nothing’s going to be rushed. It’s not going to take forever but we know a little bit what we want to do here and we’ll take our time and make the right decision.

"The style of football is important to us as we go forward. You’ve got to have one eye on the future.

"We know what we want but I won’t put the CV out in the media – we’ll tell the candidates."

McMahon could still be in charge when Fleet resume their Vanarama Conference South campaign away to Maidenhead United on Saturday. They sit fourth in the league, seven points behind leaders Boreham Wood.

Mr Varney said: "He’s a good lad, Macca, and it’s in safe hands.

"We’ve got to look at whether we need to strengthen in certain positions – and we will - but we’ll take our time over this and get it right."
