An ambulance patient has died after a multi-vehicle smash en route to hospital.

The Fiat Ducato ambulance had been travelling on the A299 coastbound near the Margate Road Interchange when it was involved in a collision with a grey Nissan Qashqai and a beige Land Rover Defender.

The ambulance had its lights and sirens activated at the time of the smash, which occurred at about 9.30 am on February 16.

Officers attended and emergency crews treated people for injuries.

A patient in the ambulance described as a man in his 80s, was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are now carrying out enquiries and officers are appealing to anyone who saw what happened, or who has relevant dashcam footage, to come forward.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson added: “SECAmb can confirm that one of its ambulances was involved in a collision on the A299, Thanet Way, in Herne Bay, at approximately 9.30am on Friday 16 February 2024. The vehicle was en route to hospital with a patient at the time of the collision.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the patient, who sustained injuries in the collision and later died. We urge any witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to contact Kent Police.”
