Herne Bay Cosy Crew decorate 30 post boxes with knitting

Post boxes across Herne Bay have been decorated in Christmas knitting for the second year running.

The Herne Bay Cosy Crew is behind the initiative, which has seen 30 post boxes transformed.

They decorated 12 in the town last year but have more than doubled their efforts this winter after receiving a “phenomenal response” in 2015.

Pillar boxes in Eddington Lane, Beltinge Road, the High Street and Mickleburgh Hill have all been decorated, with those outside the train station and on the seafront also dressed up.

Organiser Sara Worley, who lives in Maidstone, said: “We made 12 last year and they were so popular we have more than doubled that this year.

“It was not originally our idea, but we saw a group in Essex do it and thought it would work really well in Herne Bay.

“All of the post boxes are completely different – everyone has designed and made their own one.”

Almost 20 people worked on the covers this year before they were put in place over the weekend.

Ms Worley, who grew up in West Cliff Drive, Hampton, added: “It takes about a month to make one of the pieces – they are a lot bigger than they look.

“We thought the people of Herne Bay would really appreciate it and a lot of people have come forward and offered to make them.

“The town is very creative and there are so many great knitters in Herne Bay.”

The Cosy Crew knitting group is inviting people to take selfies in front of the post boxes and add them to their Facebook page.

Ms Worley’s first project in the town was a knitted beach hut for the Herne Bay Festival in 2014, before her group covered part of the pier in the spring.

Among the characters knitted on the landmark’s railings included the Red Arrows display team.
