The actor was once a member of the hip-hop group So Solid Crew and was jailed in 2002 for 18 months after carrying a loaded pistol that had been modified to fire live ammunition.

On his release, he swapped music for the big screen and more recently moved from London to Kent in search of a quieter life.

A clip shared on Instagram by Theroux shows him testing out weights at Walters’ home gym.

The journalist is seen struggling before the former singer makes light work of the lift.

Theroux said: “The foundational UK artist and gifted actor Ashley Walters, aka Asher D, perhaps best known as the man behind Dushane, in the Netflix smash Top Boy, invited me to his house in Kent to - yes - lift some weights in his gym but more importantly to talk about his life and career.

“He treated me to several hours of in-depth and thoughtful conversation about growing up in Peckham, So Solid Crew, catching a gun charge and doing time in prison, Hollywood films, family life, social anxiety and much much more.

“Thank you, Ashley, for having me along and answering my questions with such eloquence and sensitivity.”

Louis Theroux Interviews: Ashley Walters airs tonight on BBC 2 at 9pm.
