Exhibition plans for silver jubilee of Hythe Rotary Round the Houses races at South Road

Hythe’s annual Rotary Round the Houses races may celebrate its silver anniversary with a portable exhibition.

Schools involved in next May’s race, the 25th, could be visited by the display showing past race photographs, programmes and newspaper reports.

Details of early plans were revealed by race administrator David Paton when he applied to Hythe Town Council for use of the South Road Recreation Ground and Sports Pavilion for the event.

His letter to the council said: “The year 2015 will be the 25th anniversary, during which many thousands of local children have taken part.

“To celebrate the occasion we plan to devise some special features for our poster/programme/sponsors with perhaps a portable exhibition, which could be moved around local schools that support us, showing past race photos, programmes and newspaper reports.

“This could also be displayed in the Pavilion.”

Round the Houses takes place on Sunday, May 10, from 8am until 4pm.

Last May’s event raised £1,200 to provide two emergency boxes for Shelterbox. This charity provides items such as tents for disaster areas worldwide.

Last Thursday Hythe Town Council’s finance and general purposes committee agreed to provide free use of the rec and loan of the pavilion. This is expected to be ratified by the full council next Thursday.

Round the Houses is a series of races involving hundreds of people. In 2013 the figure was more than 600.

There are nine races, one for adults and the others for youngsters up to 16 for various age groups, usually separately for boys and girls.

The youngest group is pre-school and reception year children running for 300 metres and the oldest is over-16s for 6km (3.7 miles).
